Global Links is a Pittsburgh-based non-profit dedicated to improving health in communities in need. Global Links collaborates with U.S. healthcare institutions and the community to rescue hundreds of tons of high-quality surplus medical materials every year. These materials are shared with public health facilities around the world and with non-profit organizations in Western Pennsylvania that are providing care for our community’s most vulnerable people.

Students from The Day School at The Children’s Institute have volunteered at Global Links for over five years. Global Links has been incredibly cooperative and welcoming of Day School students. 

The vocational tasks performed at Global Links are typically challenging and diverse. Over the years, Global Links has truly partnered with Day School team members to find creative ways to accommodate a range of students. As a result, Day School students are given the appropriate support to perform various tasks but are still challenged by the complexity of the tasks.

This element of volunteer work is very important because it mimics realistic situations that occur in many competitive employment sites. Students who have volunteered at Global Links have gone on to be very successful in postsecondary programs and many have pursued competitive employment. The Day School is appreciative of the work Global Links does across the world, as well as locally with our own students.

The Day School’s Community-Based Instruction program provides real-world learning experiences that help students meet their goals after graduation.
